Used Electric Car Parts: What to Look Out For
Electric cars have special components that distinguish them from traditional combustion engine vehicles. There is no gearbox or clutch . Other components are barely distinguishable from those of a conventional combustion engine vehicle. Our guide highlights the differences, provides helpful tips for buying used car parts for electric cars, and answers many questions.
What electric car parts can be replaced?
This applies, for example, to body parts that can be damaged in an accident or deteriorate due to corrosion, just like other car parts.
All chassis components and braking system parts can also be replaced on an electric car. The same goes for the interior equipment and windows. Heating and air conditioning parts can also be replaced without any problems on electric cars.
Replacing the motor and battery of an electric car
The batteries and motors of electric cars wear out as they travel. Replacing the battery of an electric car is quite complicated and is therefore usually carried out by specialized companies. The same is not true for drive motors.
In Germany, all work on the high-voltage electrical components of electric cars may only be carried out by trained, specialist personnel. In all cases, the high-voltage supply must be disconnected, for example by removing the service disconnect plug.
What used parts are available for electric cars?
Almost all components of electric cars can be purchased used in good condition. Car parts are removed from donor vehicles as part of car recycling , inspected, and then offered for sale.
Electronics and lighting : Electronic components for electric vehicles are readily available second-hand. These include, for example, sensors of various types, radar components, or electronic control units. Other components such as window regulators , cameras, displays, or audio system components are also available second-hand. The same applies to headlights and taillights. Even charging cables for charging stations are sometimes available second-hand.
Drivetrain and suspension parts : In an electric car, too, the power must be transmitted from the engine to the wheels. The corresponding drive shafts are available as used car parts, and the wheel hubs can also be purchased second-hand. These include, for example, struts, shock absorbers, coil springs, and control arms, or components such as the stabilizer bar and steering gear.
Brakes and wheels: Although an electric car often brakes using regenerative braking, a complete braking system is still present. Many braking components can be purchased used on an electric car, such as brake calipers or discs . ABS components, brake boosters , or parts such as the brake cylinder are also available used. Complete wheels, individual rims as replacement parts, or hubcaps are also available.
Body parts and windows: All body components can become damaged or rusty, even on an electric car. Good-quality used body parts, such as doors, trunk lids , and hoods, can be used to remedy the situation inexpensively and are readily available. The same goes for bumpers, fenders, or add-on parts like spoilers. Windows, such as side windows, are also available second-hand and can therefore be replaced inexpensively on an electric car.
